Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has described Ojukwu Jr. as ‘a sad irony’ of his father, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
 
He said this while debunking a claim that he pestered Emeka Ojukwu to return to the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

How US Congressman Jefferson Was Jailed Over Bribe Saga In Nigeria


William Jefferson, the New Orleans, US congressman convicted in 2009 on bribery charges after he was famously caught with $90,000 cash stashed in his freezer, is now a free man.

A federal judge had reduced his 13-year sentence to the time he has already served: five years and five months.

The reduced sentence came on the joint recommendation of prosecutors and defence attorneys after a Supreme Court ruling in an unrelated case made it more difficult to convict public officials on bribery charges. Jefferson was freed from prison in October, when Judge T.S. Ellis III tossed out seven of his 10 conviction counts.

Company exec mauled to death by shark as she went scuba diving


A Manhattan private equity director was killed by a shark while scuba diving off the coast of Costa Rica, authorities said.

Rohina Bhandari, 49, was identified by friends as the American tourist who was attacked by a tiger shark off of remote Isla del Coco Thursday.

Bhandari was hauled out of the water after sustaining severe bites to her legs, Costa Rica’s Environment Ministry said.

Raped Libya returnees pregnant


Some of the female victims, who were recently evacuated from Libya, are said to be pregnant after being raped by their captors while in detention in Libya, just as some Nigerians still in Libya are said to have spurned efforts to bring them back to Nigeria.

A member of the Edo States Task Force on Libya Returnees, Comrade Solomon Okoduwa, informed Sunday Tribune at the weekend that the victims were subjected to dehumanising experience by their captors. He disclosed that about  560 Nigerians are expected to be repatriated into the country from Libya this week.

Gunmen Kill Cattle Dealer, 3 Others In Bayelsa


Unidentified gunmen on Saturday killed a prominent cattle dealer in Bayelsa, identified as Alhaji Jubril Abdukareem. He was killed along with three of his workers.

The slain cattle dealer was also the leader of the cattle dealers union known as Miyetti Allah in the cattle market in Bayelsa Palm area of Yenagoa , Bayelsa capital.

It was gathered that Abdukareem was killed along the Bayelsa Palm Road.

Over 650 Libyan deportees returned to Edo State over the past three months and the tales of their sojourn in the North African country, where they had planned to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Italy, was heart-breaking. 168 of them returned to Benin-City on Wednesday while 108 arrived Friday; they were received by officials of Edo State Task Force Against Human Trafficking. Sunday Vanguard observed that some of the women were pregnant and emaciated just like the men who said they were used as slaves. Governor Godwin Obaseki had promised to train the returnees in skills as part of the efforts to reintegrate them into the society. Most of the deportees lamented that their sponsors promised to take them to Europe only to abandon them in Libya.

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State says he will pay all salary arrears of civil servants cleared and the pension arrears of retirees before the end of 2017.
Bello also said he would commence prompt payment of salaries of workers in the state public service from January 2018.

IGP, orders arrest of Lawyer for writing letter for client


A team of Police officers from the office of Inspector General of Police, IGP monitoring section arrested a Lagos Lawyer, Barrister Olufemi Ajiboso and detained him for two days for writing a letter on behalf of his client over a business transaction.

It was gathered that the armed police team who came from the Police Headquarters in Abuja to Lagos led by one Udofia Akpan and other officers were said to have come to recover debt owed by Ajiboso’s client. They stormed Ajiboso’s chambers at Agege area of Lagos and bundled him away in a Rambo-style to an undisclosed location, claiming that it was an order from the IGP.

IPMAN threatens to increase fuel price to N160


The Ore depot branch of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria has threatened to increase petrol price from the approved price of N145 to about N160 per litre.

The chairman of the branch, Shina Amoo, who said this in an interview with our correspondent in Ile Ife on Saturday, explained that marketers in some states in the South-West would not have to increase petrol price because Depot and Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria had increased the price of fuel sold to marketers by N16.

15 Killed, 53 Injured In Borno Suicide Attacks


The Police in Borno, yesterday, said 15 persons died when two suicide bombers attacked the Biu Market, in Biu Local Government Area of the state.

Mr Victor Isuku, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), made the confirmation in a statement issued in Maiduguri. Isuku said that 53 persons sustained injuries.

Kidnapped 84-yr-old ex-lawmaker killed after family paid ransom


84-year old Chief Abbot Ogbobula was abducted by a six-man gang of kidnappers on June 26, from his home at Ihuba village in Ahoada, Rivers State, has been killed.

The kidnapper demanded a N20 million ransom and were first given the sum of N200,000 then an additional N500,000 by the relatives of Chief Abbot, but they ended up killing him.
